Physical Education Subject Specific Pedagogies.

IN addition to our generic pedagogies, which are:

  • Flexible groupings

  •  Revisiting prior learning from lessons

  •  Retrieval of prior knowledge in different contexts

  •  I do, we do,you do

  • Chunking lesson

  • Strategies for remembering

  • Sequential graphics

  • Working walls (consistent subject specific design)

  • Explicit teaching of vocabulary. (E.g. Use of visualiser / Demonstrate methods and techniques).

We also have the following subject specific pedagogies for PE:

  •  At the start of each unit, our pupils (where possible) observe an expert in any given particular area: for example in athletics, pupils may observe Usain Bolt run 100m before developing sprinting techniques.

  • Pupils will begin each practical lesson by engaging in a warm up activity – pupils will understand the importance of a warm up, what is happening in their bodies and how this leads to healthy active lifestyles.

  • Teaching staff will use and refer to the 3 pillars of progression to inform their pedagogical approach to each lesson.

  • In KS2, where appropriate, children may compete in a given sport in Week 6, whilst developing physical literacy in PE.

  • Formative assessment approaches are applied at all times in each lesson however, the final lesson in the unit, is an ‘end of unit assessment lesson’.

  • Regular representation of the subject within ‘Low Stakes Friday Curriculum Quiz’ to reinforce KS&U and aid cognitive load. Teachers guided by subject lead’s key questioning document.

  • SEND adaptations are made for pupils who need them.
