SMSC

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. All schools in England must show how well their pupils develop in SMSC.

Pupils are assessed on how hard they are prepared to try and how much they are prepared to do.

Spiritual

Explore beliefs and experience; respect values; discover oneself and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity; reflect.

Moral

Recognise right and wrong; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned views.

Social

Use social skills in different contexts; work well with others; resolve conflicts; understand how communities work.

Cultural

Appreciate cultural influences; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

 

In our school, this means teaching our children how to be good citizens, how to respond to challenging situations, how to appreciate the world around them, and to value and respect the differences between all of us. We do this through ‘Philosophy for Children’ lessons and PSHE lessons (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional). PSHE is embedded in everything we do; in how we speak to our children, in how we model good behaviours and expectations of ourselves and each other; how we respect one another and how we work together as a team towards one goal.
